I avoided mineral sunscreen for years because of the stereotype, thick, chalky, leaves a gray cast, impossible to wear under makeup. So I kept cycling through chemical sunscreens instead, and kept getting the same small breakouts along my hairline every summer without ever connecting the dots.
A dermatologist finally said it plainly: some of the chemical filters I was using were likely irritating my skin, and it was worth just trying mineral for a season to see what happened. I was skeptical. The breakouts stopped within about three weeks.
A few things that made the switch actually livable, since the old stereotypes aren’t entirely wrong if you pick the wrong formula:
Tinted mineral sunscreen instead of plain white zinc. The tint counteracts the cast almost completely and doubles as light coverage. (search tinted mineral sunscreen on Amazon)
A lighter, gel-based mineral formula for humid days. The thick, creamy ones are fine in winter but miserable in July. A gel-based zinc sunscreen absorbs faster and doesn’t pill under moisturizer. (search gel mineral sunscreen on Amazon)
A mineral SPF lip balm, since I was reapplying face sunscreen and completely ignoring my lips, which burn just as easily. (search SPF lip balm on Amazon)
I’m not going to claim mineral is objectively superior for everyone, plenty of people do fine on chemical filters. But if you’ve had unexplained irritation for years and never suspected your sunscreen, it’s a cheap thing to rule out before assuming it’s something else.
